Japan Luggage Check

Will your suitcase fit in Japan?

Type in the three dimensions and the weight of your bag. This page checks it against coin locker sizes, the Shinkansen oversized baggage rule, takkyubin delivery size bands and the carry-on limits of Japanese airlines at once, so you do not have to read four different rulebooks.

Coin locker sizes in Japan

Station coin lockers come in a small number of standard cabinet sizes. Every operator buys its own cabinets, so the figures below are the sizes you will meet most often rather than a nationwide standard, and the price depends on the station and the operator.

Shinkansen oversized baggage

Baggage whose three sides add up to more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm counts as oversized on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, and needs a reserved seat with an Oversized Baggage Area. The reservation is free; boarding without one is charged ¥1000. Nothing over 250 cm may be carried on.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 28-inch suitcase fit in a Japanese coin locker?

Not in the medium cabinet most banks are made of, which is only about 34 × 57 × 50 cm inside. A 28-inch case runs roughly 68 to 75 cm tall, so it needs the large class — about 34 × 57 × 84 cm — which every major station has but in far smaller numbers. Depth is what usually decides it: a case over 34 cm deep with its wheels will not go in whatever its height. Enter your exact numbers above.

When does the Shinkansen need an oversized baggage reservation?

When the three sides of your bag add up to more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm, and you are travelling on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen. The reservation costs nothing extra, but boarding without one is a ¥1000 charge. Above 250 cm the bag cannot be brought on board at all.

What takkyubin size is my suitcase?

Add the three sides in centimetres and take the first band that is not exceeded — 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180 or 200. Weight matters too: a light but bulky case is priced by its size, a small but heavy one by its weight, and the larger of the two answers wins.

Can I take my suitcase as carry-on on a Japanese domestic flight?

On ANA and JAL aircraft with 100 seats or more the limit is 55 × 40 × 25 cm, 115 cm in total and 10 kg including your personal item. Japanese low-cost carriers allow a similar size but only 7 kg, and they charge for checked bags.

Are the numbers on this site official?

Every rule links to the operator's own page and carries the date we last read it (2026-09-09). The one thing that cannot be pinned down is coin locker sizes: each station orders its own cabinets, so the dimensions here are the common standard rather than a guarantee.
